President Donald Trump attacked former FBI director James Comey and claimed he was not fired for his role in the Russia investigation, in a Wednesday tweet.

Trump has railed against Comey for his ongoing series of interviews in which he has attacked the President’s character and appearance. He did note in an interview with NBCNews Lester Holt, however, that was considering “the Russia thing” when he made the decision to fire Comey.

Comey discussed his firing in an interview with Stephen Colbert Tuesday evening noting that he was shocked to be fired by Trump in 2017. “I thought, I’m leading the Russia investigation. Even though our relationship was becoming strained, there’s no way I’m going to get fired or whacked,” the former FBI director told the late night host, adding “that would be a crazy things to do. Why would you fire the FBI director whose leading the Russia investigation?”
