Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa rode an 80-foot wave off the coast of Portugal in November, and it’s now been officially confirmed that it was the largest wave ever surfed.

WATCH:

Koxa, 38, beat reigning record-holder Garrett McNamara’s wave by two feet, which had stood since 2011. Koxa bagged a $25,000 prize for his effort from Quiksilver XXL at the World Surf League Big Wave Awards in California. U.K. surfer Andrew Cotton also received an award for biggest wipeout, after he broke his back surfing a wave at Nazare Break, the same beach Koxa found his 80-foot monster.

“The award goes to the surfer who, by any means available, catches the biggest wave of the year,” the World Surf League said in a statement. “Not only did Koxa win this year’s honour, but he now holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest wave surfed.”

Brazilian surfer Carlos Burle was thought to have broken the record with a supposed 100-foot Nazare wave in 2013, but his feat was never officially recognized.
