MSNBC’s Chris Matthews said in a POLITICO podcast on Tuesday that he believes Rep. Joe Kennedy III will take over House Democratic leadership.

Matthews told “Off Message” that he’s been hearing rumors that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will tap Kennedy to take her leadership position.

“Somebody hit me with the rumor last night that Nancy Pelosi is going to turn it over to Joey the third,” Matthews said. “Have you heard that rumor?”

Edward-Isaac Dovere, the podcast host and POLITICO’s chief Washington correspondent, said that he had not heard the rumor but would not be surprised by it.

“I mean [Joe] Crowley is more open about wanting it, but there are a lot of Democrats in the House who talk about Kennedy [as the speaker],” Dovere asserted.

Some members of the Democratic Party have begun to question Pelosi’s leadership and have veered away from her comments on tax reform and impeachment. Reps. Seth Moulton and Kathleen Rice have both specifically called for her to resign from her leadership position. (RELATED: Nancy Pelosi Losing Control Of House Democrats)
