The Trump administration made it clear Saturday that Beijing will not be allowed to export censorship and its own Communist Party brand of political correctness to the rest of the world.

The Chinese government sent a threatening letter on April 25 to dozens of international airlines warning that they would face severe consequences if they failed to identify Taiwan as a part of China, according to The Washington Post, which obtained a copy of the letter. The letter from China’s Civil Aviation Administration is the latest in a series of similar actions Beijing has taken to force foreign companies to advance its questionable interests.

The White House says it will resist Chinese efforts to make the world bend to its will.

President Donald Trump, who ran against political correctness at home, “will stand up for Americans resisting efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to impose Chinese political correctness on American companies and citizens,” a White House statement released Saturday read.

Calling Beijing’s coercive practices pure “Orwellian nonsense” and “part of a growing trend by the Chinese Communist Party to impose its political views on American citizens and private companies,” the administration warned, “China’s efforts to export its censorship and political correctness to Americans and the rest of the free world will be resisted.”

“We call on China to stop threatening and coercing American carriers and citizens,” the statement concluded, reportedly marking the strongest rebuke to date by the U.S. government of China’s efforts to manipulate foreign companies to ensure that they meet Beijing’s demands. No previous administration has pushed back this hard on this particular issue.
