President Trump’s meeting with Kim Jong Un on June 12 will fall on the 31st anniversary of Ronald Regan’s monumental “tear down this wall” speech.

On June 12, 1987, then-President Reagan stood before the Brandenburg Gate on the west side of the Berlin Wall and delivered one of the most iconic sentences in American history: “Mr. Gorbachev … tear down this wall!”

The wall dividing East and West Berlin was torn down soon thereafter in 1989. This historic development represented the end of The Cold War and the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, liberating millions of people from the seemingly inescapable grasp of the hammer and sickle.

President Donald Trump will add to the legacy of this already significant date when he meets with North Korean communist dictator Kim Jong Un in Singapore. This meeting will make him the first United States president to sit down with a North Korean dictator.

Much like Reagan before him, Trump is often criticized for his approach to foreign diplomacy. His behavior has been largely unconventional throughout his time in office. He referred to Kim Jong Un as “Little Rocket Man” and jeered at him for his height and weight. The results, however, speak for themselves.
