A Chinese family gave away their dog after discovering it was actually a black bear, according to Newsweek Monday.

A family from Kunming, China, accidentally adopted an endangered Asiatic Black Bear cub, mistaking it for a Tibetan mastiff puppy, Newsweek reported. The bear, “Little Black,” caused suspicion after wolfing down cups of noodles and boxes of fruit every day, eventually growing to three-feet-tall and 250 pounds and demonstrating prolific capabilities at walking on its two hind legs, China News Service reported.

“The more he grew, the more like a bear he looked,” the bear’s former owner, Su Yun, said to China News Service, according to the Independent. “I am a little scared of bears.”

The bear previously lived in Yun’s home before officials transported it to Yunnan Wildlife Rescue Centre. Their former pet had to be sedated in order to be successfully relocated to the wildlife center. If the bear was not rescued, it could possibly be sold on the black market, worth tens of thousands of dollars. Another Chinese woman recently discovered her pet dog was actually a fox, after being confused about why it never barked, Yahoo! News reported.
