Kensington Palace announced Friday that Prince Charles will walk Meghan Markle down the aisle after her father was unable to attend following major heart surgery.

According to Vanity Fair, it was not the Queen or Prince Harry who asked his father to walk his bride at the royal wedding Saturday, but Markle herself. (RELATED: Here’s Who Will Be Part Of Meghan Markle And Prince Harry’s Bridal Party)

“It’s been a difficult few days but Meghan has also made sure not to lose sight of the fact that tomorrow is going to be a very special day and she’s very excited,” a palace aide explained. “She asked the Prince of Wales herself if he would walk her down the aisle.”

The announcement comes just hours after the bride-to-be shared that her father Thomas Markle would not be able to be part of her big day due to his health.

“Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health,” a statement from Kensington Palace read from the bride-to-be. “I would like to thank everyone who has generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday.”

The royal wedding will take place Saturday at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
