Former first lady and defeated 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will endorse Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York over the female candidate in the Democratic primary, according to The New York Times.

In her first campaign involvement since 2016, Clinton intends to formally support Cuomo later this week instead of progressive political newcomer Cynthia Nixon, an openly lesbian Democratic activist and former star of HBO’s “Sex and the City,” Nick Merrill, Clinton’s longtime spokesman, told The NYT. Cuomo has been a Clinton ally for years and has a 22-point lead over Nixon for in the Democratic nomination, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll.

During the 2016 primary, Nixon described herself as “a Clinton person” in an interview with Bloomberg, but also said the most important issue facing the U.S. was income disparity, which Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont focused on in his campaign against for the presidential nomination.

Clinton also recorded a robo-call for Stacey Abrams, former Democratic house minority leader in the Georgia General Assembly, for the party’s nomination in the state’s gubernatorial primary, The NYT reported. She is also working to promote minority and female political candidates through her political action committee, Onward Together.

“While Republicans are hellbent on focusing on the past, she is focused on the future,” Merrill said.

Clinton has blamed misogyny as a partial reason for her loss to President Donald Trump in the 2016 election, and said that there is still bias against female political candidates. Women “will be under tremendous pressure from fathers and husbands and boyfriends and male employers not to vote for ‘the girl'” in future races, Clinton told NPR News in September.
