Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe apologized for using the phrase “shoot to kill” during a Tuesday interview on CNN.

The metaphor was employed to warn Democrats against rushing to impeach too quickly, but Tribe said he was sorry for his “terrible word choice” and noted that he is an activist against gun violence.

“In an otherwise good interview I made a terrible word choice, saying an impeachment ‘bullet’ can only be ‘shot once’ so one must ‘shoot to kill,'” Tribe tweeted. “I wasn’t speaking literally, but as one who works hard to reduce gun violence this was just inexcusable.”
