Ireland has long been seen as a bastion of the Catholic Church, but its May 25 vote to lift its national ban on abortion dealt a major blow to that vision — Pope Francis isn’t doing anything to help.

The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Anders Hagstrom explained how Pope Francis didn’t make any public statements before the vote to encourage Catholics to preserve the ban and has yet to condemn the result. Most Catholics are well aware of the church’s condemnation of the practice, and Francis has convinced individuals that abortion is wrong, but why is he reluctant to encourage that logic politically?

Ireland’s bishops aren’t so shy; however, and they used strong language to condemn any Catholics who voted to repeal the ban. Pope Francis isn’t scheduled to go to Ireland until August. Could he wait that long before condemning Ireland’s vote?
