One week after she uttered the insult heard around the world, TBS’s Samantha Bee laid blame on the media during an on-air apology for using the term “feckless c**t” to describe first daughter Ivanka Trump.

Bee followed the cold open with one more apology, “sorry for breaking America,” and introduced a new addition to the show: A panel of four censors who she joked would be a part of the show from this point on.

While she took responsibility for choosing that particular word, Bee also blamed the 24-hour news cycle for focusing on content rather than substance. She said, “I should have known that a potty-mouthed insult would be inherently more interesting than juvenile immigration policy.”

Bee defended her word choice, claiming that her intent was to “reclaim” the word for women, but she did admit that she could see how that might go wrong.

“It is a word I have used on the show many times, hoping to reclaim it. This time, I used it as an insult. I crossed a line. I regret it and I do apologize.

The problem is that many women have heard that word at the worst moments of their lives. A lot of them don’t want that word reclaimed. They want it gone, and I don’t blame them. I don’t want to inflict more pain on them. Many men were also offended by my use of the word … I do not care about that.”

Taking a more serious tone, Bee apologized to the children affected by American immigration policy, saying that she was sorry she had “distracted from them.”

At no point did Bee offer a direct apology to Ivanka Trump, the target of her insult, for either her word choice or the fact that she implied there was an incestuous relationship between Ivanka and her father, President Donald Trump.
