Fox News host Tucker Carlson had to keep a former Democratic staffer on topic Friday after he repeatedly tried to shift a interview to a discussion about immigration.

WATCH:

Carlson invited Jon Summers, former communications director for Sen. Harry Reid, on his show to talk about the imprisonment of ex-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. However, Summers kept trying to pivot the conversation to talk about immigrant children being separated from their parents.

“Tell me the thousands of kids who are being held in these detention centers down in the south including Brownsville, Texas what they’ve done wrong and yet they’re being held in detention centers,” Summers said.

“Slow down, those are not American citizens,” Carlson, a co-founder of The Daily Caller, replied. “That’s a separate debate, which I’m happy to have with you, and I hope you’ll come back and talk about it.”

Carlson got back to the Manafort case and asked if Summers is comfortable with locking people up before they are ever found guilty of a crime — even if that person does not represent a flight risk.

“Guess what, that happens in our country every single day…now all of a sudden that it’s a rich white guy there’s this concern,” Summers said.

“I wonder why you make it a racial issue?” Carlson said. “This is not race-related. It has nothing to do with race.”
