The White House issued a statement Friday afternoon attacking MSNBC host Joe Scarborough’s comparison between U.S. detention centers and concentration camps.

“It is appalling that Joe Scarborough would compare sworn federal law enforcement officers — who put their lives on the line every day to keep American people safe — to Nazis,” White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said in the statement. “This is the type of inflammatory and unacceptable rhetoric that puts a target on the backs of our great law enforcement.”

“It is also horribly insulting to the memory of the 6 million Jews who perished in the Nazi Holocaust. Not only is Scarborough’s rhetoric shameful, but his facts are categorically false,” he continued.

Gidley’s statement are in response to Scarborough comparing American immigration detention centers to gas chambers used in Nazi Germany. The MSNBC host said, “children are being told and their parents are being told that they’re being taken off to the showers.” (RELATED: ‘MORNING JOE’ COMPARES US IMMIGRATION DETENTION FACILITIES TO CONCENTRATION CAMPS)
