Republican Sen. John McCain is viewed more favorably by Democratic voters in Arizona than Republicans, according to a poll released Sunday.

The CBS News Battleground Tracker poll asked Arizona voters to opine on the state’s U.S. senators. Overall, McCain had a 39 percent favorability rating, however, only 20 percent of Republican voters viewed him favorably, compared to 62 percent of Democratic voters.

McCain, who had an overall 44 percent unfavorability rating, was also viewed as more unfavorable to Republicans than Democrats. 68 percent of Republicans viewed him unfavorably while only 17 percent of Democrats felt the same way. The Arizona senator has had a tumultuous relationship with President Donald Trump and has become an outspoken critic. Most notably, McCain helped to kill the Trump-backed skinny repeal of Obamacare in a surprising “no” vote.

In his latest demonstration of disapproval, Trump mocked the senator during a rally in Nevada on Saturday. “Nobody talked to him. Nobody needed to, and then he walked in: thumbs-down,” Trump told the crowd referring to McCain’s healthcare vote.

McCain was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in July 2017 and has since taken a reduced role while he undergoes treatment.

The margin of error for the CBS poll is +/- 3.7 percentage points.
