Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky expressed his gratitude on Tuesday for Democrats’ lack of firearm knowledge when it comes to crafting gun laws.

“Let’s be thankful [Democrats] are pandering to emotion instead of logic when they do try to advance anti-gun legislation,” Massie told The Daily Caller News Foundation at a banquet celebrating ten years since the U.S. Supreme Court came down with its landmark decision in District of Columbia vs. Heller.

“Honestly, I’m glad they’re not [knowledgeable] because their gun bans would be more detrimental to our right to keep and bear arms,” he continued. “For instance, when they passed the 1994 so-called Assault Weapons Ban, they banned them based on cosmetics and not functionality or lethality and I’m thankful for that.” (RELATED: GOP Rep Introduces Bill To Make Concealed Carry Easier In DC)

Massie, a staunch supporter of individuals’ right of self-defense, has been a champion of pro-gun legislation in Congress. He introduced D.C. concealed carry reciprocity legislation immediately following the shooting at a congressional baseball game practice in 2017 where six people were injured, including Majority Whip Steve Scalise. The bill still has almost 100 co-sponsors. If had been allowed at the time, the politicians could have been armed and able to fight back against the shooter.

He also introduced the SAFER Voter Act in February 2018, which he emphasized the need for earlier in the day Tuesday at a rally in front of the Supreme Court building. The bill would reduce the age of handgun purchases to 18, providing 18 to 20-year-olds their constitutional right to bear arms.

“I think their motivation is emotional not logical and they have an emotional objection to gun ownership not a logical objection to gun ownership,” Massie said, concerning Democrats’ propensity to advocate for counterproductive gun legislation. “It’s not our job to tell them how to write a gun ban.”

Referring back to the unproductiveness of the Assault Weapons Ban he said, “Let’s be thankful they’re not thinking logical. Let’s be thankful they don’t know much about guns.”
