Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said Sunday that she would not support a replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy that was in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade.

“I would not support a nominee who demonstrated hostility to Roe v. Wade because that would mean to me their judicial philosophy did not include a respect for established decisions, established law,” Collins told CNN’s Jake Tapper Sunday morning. “I believe that that is the very important fundamental tenant of our judicial system, which as Roberts says, h’elps to promote stability and even handedness.'”

Collins and GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska (along with some other speculative senators) are expected to be the swing votes for or against President Donald Trump’s nominee to replace Kennedy, who announced his retirement last week. (RELATED: Kennedy Calls It Quits)

Trump, notably, said Thursday that he would not ask his nominees their stance on Roe v. Wade, which Collins said should be the course of action. (RELATED: Here Are The Favorites To Replace Kennedy)

“I think what he said as the candidate may not have been informed by the legal advice that he now has,” Collins told CNN. “It would be inappropriate for him to ask a nominee how he or she would rule on a specific issue.”
