Princeton University professor Cornel West blamed the United States for Venezuela’s failed socialistic policies during a Friday interview on Fox News.

West, who is an honorary chair of the Democratic Socialists of America, joined Fox News host Tucker Carlson to defend the socialist platform in America.

Carlson argued that socialism does not have a very successful track record, noting its specific failures in Venezuela.

“Has it struck you as interesting that it’s never actually worked anywhere?” The Daily Caller co-founder asked. “The question is not, ‘what are our goals?’ Our goals are the same. How do we get there is the question, so what happened in Venezuela? They call that Democratic socialism but they don’t have toilet paper. And it’s less equal than ever.”

“Any time there’s been the attempts of ordinary people to engage in self-determination they can be crushed by external nations,” West replied. “Look at U.S. policies toward Venezuela — have been very, very ugly.”

West concluded, “We never really had a chance to pull it off so it’s only been a movement so far.”
