California Rep. Adam Schiff has “had a terrible last couple of years,” Republican South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy said in a scathing interview about his Democratic counterpart Thursday night.

“He wanted to be the attorney general under Hillary Clinton, and nobody in the country worked harder to protect her than Adam Schiff. He wanted to run for the Senate in the People’s Republic of California, but he couldn’t win either of those seats. So now, he wants to be the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee,” Gowdy told Fox News’ Jason Chaffetz.

Gowdy was responding to remarks that Schiff made in an interview with CNN on June 28 about House Republicans’ efforts to obtain information about the FBI and Justice Department’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government. Schiff included Gowdy as one of “four horsemen of the apocalypse” in the effort to obtain the information.

“We have all too many members of Congress trying to prostrate themselves before the Executive and give him anything he wants,” Schiff told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

“The four horsemen of this apocalypse have been Devin Nunes, Trey Gowdy, Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan,” he continued. “They have been leading the charge basically to require the Justice Department to give them materials that can be leaked or fed or misrepresented…in the service of the President.”

Gowdy responded by noting that he has never met President Donald Trump. He also suggested that Schiff is bitter at having lost opportunities to advance his political career due to Trump’s victory over Clinton.

“Let me tell you this about Adam. Adam’s had a terrible last couple of years,” Gowdy said.

Gowdy, the chairman of the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee, rattled off a list of topics that would not have become public if Schiff had his way.

The Republican noted that Schiff tried to prevent information about the unverified Steele dossier from becoming public. He has also downplayed the release of anti-Trump text messages exchanged between former FBI official Peter Strzok and FBI attorney Lisa Page.

Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, has also pushed against the release of information about Clinton’s private email server and the Obama administration’s response to the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Gowdy argued.

“I don’t think anybody on my side of the aisle gives much of a damn what Adam Schiff thinks,” said Gowdy.
