In Friday morning’s edition of The Washngton Post, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Tom Toles took aim at President Donald Trump — and he used the desperate Thai children trapped in a flooded cave to do it.

The cartoon shows a reporter saying, “The children are trapped in a cave and it may take months to get them out.” The cartoon version of President Trump, depicted watching the newscast, says, “Why didn’t we think of that?”

And just below that frame is another cut of the president musing, “I did promise to reopen coal mines.”

Toles published the cartoon even as the situation in Thailand grows more desperate by the day. Trapped nearly a mile into the Tham Luang Nang Non cave network, 12 teen boys and their soccer coach have been found and fed but still have no way out.

Thai Navy divers have been attempting to teach the boys to scuba dive, but some of them don’t know how to swim — and the journey through the cave is perilous enough that one experienced diver (a former Thai Navy SEAL) has already died attempting to place oxygen tanks in the cave.
