Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte apologized to the “all forgiving God” Tuesday night for calling him stupid and a “son of a b****.”

Duterte made the apology in a meeting with religious leaders in which he addressed his recent public tirades against God and his frequent criticisms of Catholic leaders. Duterte clarified that he apologized to his personal conception of God and not necessarily the God of Christianity. “What makes you think that your God is my God? … If it’s the same God, I’m sorry,” Duterte said in the meeting. “Sorry, God.”

“I only apologize to God, nobody else,” he added. “If I wronged God, then he would be happy to listen my apology. Why? My God is all-forgiving. Why? He does not remember past hurts. Why? Because God created me to be good, not to be bad.”

The Filipino president also reiterated his demand that religious leaders stop criticizing his administration in the name of God.

“Never ever use the name of God as a front to attack government because that is the proper way to do it” Duterte said. “There is a separation of state and church. Do not use God to attack me. That is not proper and I’m sure that is not what God wants.”

Present at the meeting were Jesus Is Lord founder and President Eduardo Villanueva, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, Special Assistant to the President Christopher Go, and attorney Angelino Villanueva, according to Manila Standard.

Eduardo, Bishop Noel Pantoja, and other church leaders said they were pleased with Duterte’s apology and explanation.
