CNN commentator John Avlon said President Donald Trump’s “powers of persuasion” haven’t worked on North Korea and won’t save him from special counsel Bob Mueller.

“I appreciate the President’s belief in his own powers of persuasion,”Avlon said on “New Day” Thursday. “It’s unclear it’s worked in the case of North Korea and it’s unlikely to work in the case of the special counsel and Robert Mueller.” (RELATED: CNN’s John Avlon Alleges White House Cover Up)

“Whatever fantasy scenario it is where special counsel just comes out of the meeting and says ‘You know what folks? We give up.’ Ain’t going to probably happen.”

Avlon said Trump’s tweets may put him in a tight spot if Mueller decides to use his words against him.

“Yesterday’s tweet is significant though, to the extent that first of all, Twitter does apply a degree of transparency,” he continued. “We know where the president’s head is at. Two, he knows that Mueller is looking at his tweets for evidence of obstruction. Three, he knows that Sessions has already recused himself. Which is the source of great frustration. So that order just digs himself in a deeper hole.”

“New Day” co-host David Gregory tried to understand Trump’s thinking and the strategy behind his tweets, but Avlon said it’s impossible to apply reason to what the president is doing.

“I think you’re applying a degree of strategy to his thinking, that maybe is better explained by impulse,” Avlon concluded.
