Democratic Rep. Karen Bass of California accused the Trump administration of committing “state sponsored child abuse,” on “Morning Joe” Friday, because of its treatment of illegal immigrant children.

Co-host Mika Brzezinski asked Bass if family separations at the border amounted to “kidnapping” or “abuse of children,” before Bass launched into a tirade against the White House. (RELATED: Joe Scarborough Compares Processing Of Illegal Immigrants To Jews In Concentration Camps)

“We are taking [the children] away and then may or may not reunite them. But you know that we’re charging the parents,” Bass said. “So for example, if you get deported there are examples of parents who are told, you have to pay $1,500 because we’re going to fly your kid home along with a chaperone. Now that’s a lucky parent that actually knows where their child is.”

“So this is state sponsored child abuse,” she added.

Bass believes the government should only be able to take a child away if there is evidence of abuse or neglect and said the welfare system has been hijacked to push a political agenda.

“The only reason you should ever separate a child from their parent is if there is documented abuse or neglect,” Bass concluded. “Not as punishment or as a deterrent. It’s a complete misuse of the child welfare system.”
