An Australian “cosplay enthusiast” could face jail time for trying to sell a toy gun he made with a 3D printer, according to his New South Wales District Court sentence hearing Monday.
Sydney resident Sicen Sun, 28, was arrested in February 2017 after allegedly attempting to sell an imitation gun on a Facebook group for $1 million, according to 9 News. Sun pleaded guilty in December 2017 to several charges, including manufacturing a pistol without a licensing permit and possessing an unauthorized pistol, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
He is also the first person in New South Wales to be charged for having blueprints to create firearms. The state made it illegal to possess digital blueprints to create 3D-printed guns in 2015. “With 20/20 hindsight I just realise how silly, idiotic, stupid and naive my actions were,” Sun told the New South Wales District Court on Monday, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
Sun also claimed he had no intention of selling his imitation gun.
“Would you in your right mind sell a piece of plastic for one million dollars?” he added.
Sun told previously told police he was a “cosplay enthusiast,” meaning that he dressed up as fictional characters. He claimed that he used his imitation guns as props.
The case will return to court Aug. 21.
