House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed Thursday that the upcoming midterm elections will decide “the fate of our nation.”

According to The New York Times, Pelosi is concerned that so many Democrats are concerned about her leadership in the House when “The fate of our nation is at stake in this election.”

Pelosi continues to grapple with the abdication of scores of Democrats — those vying to get into the House in the upcoming midterm election and those already there — who either don’t support her or won’t say if they do. As The Hill notes, there may be a least 50 candidates who are not prepared to endorse Pelosi’s continued leadership.

Pelosi warned the Times that anyone replacing her would have large shoes to fill and would need to demonstrate “a vision for the country” while unifying the party.

“What I have always tried to do is build a bridge to the future, and hope that would be in the majority,” Pelosi said. “If people want to be the bridge that I’m building toward, they have to show what’s on the other side of the bridge.”

Pelosi doesn’t appear to have he backing of the left-wing of the Democratic Party, with self-proclaimed socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez voicing discontent.

Pelosi has been the Democratic House leader in both a majority and minority role since 2003.
