California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell claimed on Friday that President Trump is attacking Democrats who fervently oppose SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh because of their race.

Democratic Senators Cory Booker and Kamala Harris have both been fierce opponents of Judge Kavanaugh, with Booker even claiming during Thursday’s hearing that he was intentionally breaking Senate rules to release “committee confidential” documents about the judge. “[Kavanaugh] is doing really well” despite the opposition, Trump said. “But do you believe the anger and the meanness on the other side? Sick! It’s sick!”

Swalwell claimed during an interview with Fox News that Trump’s comments were a racist attack on Kavanaugh’s detractors.

“What he means is he’s attacking the black Senators,” Swalwell insisted. “We’ve seen this before. He called Maxine Waters, you know, a low IQ individual, now he’s talking about Kamala Harris and Cory Booker and calling them fools.”

“I think he was referencing the display they put on in these hearings,” Fox anchor Sandra Smith pushed back.

“We’ve seen these attacks before where he attacks African Americans and goes after their intelligence rather than their arguments or their line of reasoning,” Swalwell argued. “So I just see this as more racism by the president and it’s dog-whistling that he’s doing.”
