House and Senate leaders have reached agreement on a plan to pass a temporary government funding bill that would keep the government funded through Dec. 7.
The news comes as the House plans to vote on a $147.5 billion package to fund the Energy Department, the legislative branch as well as veterans’ programs Thursday, according to The Associated Press.
Congress still has to approve this spending package as well as two other packages if they want to avoid a government shutdown. However, this is a good indicator that the house and senate could work out the other packages before Oct. 1, when the new budget year begins.
“Funding the government is one of Congress’s most basic responsibilities, and this conference report is a strong first act,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. “We look forward to sending it to the president’s desk soon.” (RELATED: Trump Vows Government Shutdown To Force Funding For Border Wall)
Members of Congress are hoping to pass the “minibus” package by Friday. It will then need to be signed by President Donald Trump.
