CNN host John Berman said Tuesday on “New Day” that he was “surprised and curious” about why Congressional Democrats were beginning to slow down their plans for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s hearing.

“I am surprised and curious about what Democrats are doing,” Berman said. (RELATED: Democrats’ Delayed Document Dump On Kavanaugh Is A ‘Question Of Fairness’ Says Law Professor Jonathan Turley)

“We heard it yesterday here with Dick Durbin, the number two in the Senate, where he said that he thought that tomorrow would be too fast for a hearing, but now all of a sudden Dianne Feinstein, Chuck Schumer … Richard Blumenthal [are saying] we need to have the FBI investigate. They seem to be putting on the brakes now.”

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford accused Kavanaugh of groping her at a party back in high school, pinned her to a bed and drunkenly tried to take her clothing off against her will.

Berman said Democrats may be looking to delay Ford’s testimony to give her time to prepare. Co-host Alisyn Camerota and CNN commentator John Avlon, however, suggested the Democrats are playing politics and don’t want Kavanaugh confirmed before the midterms.

“I can think of one reason, I can think of one reason why Democrats want to slow it down, if they can and they may not succeed. It’s to protect Ford, to give her time to prepare. Perhaps to get the witness in the right frame of mind to talk publicly,” Berman said.

“Could it be as simple as trying to delay towards the midterms,” Camerota replied.

“I mean, clearly at this point, the midterms are looming in the background of the timing, but I think Democrats may not be being motivated solely by concern for the victim, Christine Ford,” Avlon concluded. “They’re being motivated probably by politics and by a desire to make sure they have their own ducks in a row strategically and this indicates that they don’t yet.”
