A Republican coalition called for “American renewal” and threatened to leave the GOP if the party fails to rededicate itself to the nation’s “founding ideals” Thursday.

The coalition, “A Call For American Renewal,” posted a list of their principles and demanded that the Republican Party has a duty to reject conspiracy theories, division and despotism. They threatened to create a new party if the GOP does not rededicate itself to America’s founding principles.

“Thus, when in our democratic republic, forces of conspiracy, division, and despotism arise, it is the patriotic duty of citizens to act collectively in defense of liberty and justice,” the coalition wrote in its preamble. “We, therefore, declare our intent to catalyze an American renewal, and to either reimagine a party dedicated to our founding ideals or else hasten the creation of such an alternative.”

Signatories on the coalition Charlie Dent, Michael Steele, Mary Peters, Denver Riggleman and Christine Todd Whitman mentioned the coalition in an op-ed in The Washington Post Thursday, adding that the Republican Party has “lost its way” for ousting Rep. Liz Cheney as House Republican conference chair after she stood up to former President Donald Trump’s election fraud claims. Anthony Scaramucci, who formerly served as a White House communications director during Trump’s presidency, also signed on to the coalition.

The coalition affirmed that “common sense” must be restored to the political system in a time of political division and extremism.

“We are concerned citizens-a group of national, state, and local leaders-calling for American renewal. The country is tired of division and political extremism. It is time to restore a “common-sense coalition” in our political system, and we are committed to making that a reality,” the coalition said. The coalition described the nation’s founding ideals as being all people having equal, inalienable rights and to express free will and therefore condemn all forms of bigotry. The Republican Party has drifted away from these principles by showing allegiance to one person, they said.

“Our nation’s future should not be dictated by a single person but by principles that bind us together. That’s why we believe in pushing for the Republican Party to rededicate itself to founding ideals-or else hasten the creation of an alternative,” the coalition said.

The coalition posted thirteen principles that they demand the Republican Party defend and uphold. The principles include democracy, founding ideals, constitutional order, truth, and the rule of law.
