Bert M. Petersen, Jr., M.D., FACS, is a renowned surgeon and champion of the underprivileged. Since the 1990s, Dr. Petersen has engaged in a personal crusade to eliminate health disparities, particularly in terms of cancer incidence and mortality. Dr. Petersen’s compassion for the poor has led to his founding numerous educational programs and organizing many community-based outreach activities to achieve equal access to healthcare for all.<br /> <br /> Petersen graduated with a B.A. degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1983 and an M. D. from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1987. His surgical residency was completed in 1994 at The George Washington University Medical Center followed by a surgical oncology fellowship at New York City’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Next Dr. Petersen served as Attending Physician at Beth Israel Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Surgery at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine until 2004. He also served as Director of the Family Risk Program at Beth Israel Cancer Center. Concurrently, Dr. Petersen served as Director, Breast Clinic, St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center. <br /> <br /> Dr. Petersen served as Chairperson of the Early Detection Committee for the New York State Cancer Control Panel from 2002-2003, and acting medical correspondent for WCBS Channel 2 News in New York City until 2003. <br /> <br /> From 2004-2006, Dr. Petersen served as Chief of Breast Surgery for the Department of Surgery of Hackensack University Medical Center, Co-Director of Breast Cancer Services at The Cancer Center of Hackensack University Medical Center and Associate Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. <br /> <br /> Dr. Petersen is currently Director of the Breast Surgery Clinic of St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, New York and Adjunct Associate Professor of Surgery at New York University School of Medicine.
