Carlos Campo

Chair, Alliance for Hispanic Education

Dr. Carlos Campo is a leading voice in the national Hispanic community, advocating for increased college access and success for Hispanic students. He is chair of the Alliance for Hispanic Education and leads education initiatives for the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.

A renowned academician who became the first Hispanic to lead a private Christian university in the U.S., Campo has long championed higher education equality for people of every nation, tribe and tongue. He has often said he believes in color-blind education. Like Dr. King, Campo believes that all men and women, regardless of color or creed, are “members of the human family.” A four-time recipient of one of academia’s most coveted recognitions, “Who’s Who Among American Teachers,” Campo has worked tirelessly to create educational opportunities for deserving minority students.

Included among Dr. Campo’s initiatives is the creation of the “Future College Student Day” program that encourages college-going in at-risk schools. Students spend the day on campus experiencing what college is like. He also initiated a “No Place to Hate” week, a citywide series that promoted tolerance and inclusion. Campo spearheaded a faculty diversity initiative to increase faculty diversity and has served on the Council on Race and Ethnic Equality.

While president of Regent University, Dr. Campo created “Building Together,” a community partnership with Norfolk’s Coleman Place neighborhood that provides volunteers who offer a variety of resources to the community such as tutoring, family counseling and pro bono legal advice. Campo’s innovative “Take 2 Through College,” a scholarship, mentorship and leadership program that addressed the issue of African-American and Latino men having the lowest college-going and graduation rates of any group in America. The Take 2 program asked church partners to help identify the next generation of men of color who have faced and overcome challenges and have extraordinary leadership potential who desired to pursue a degree from Regent.
