Unemployed GEICO voice actor D.C. Douglas this week released a faux-public service announcement that targets “teabaggers” for “distorting health care facts” — a bit late on that one — as well as mocks Dick Armey for his first name (no joke). Douglas, who did not voice the GEICO Gecko character, was fired from his gig as an replaceable voice actor after leaving a voicemail at FreedomWorks that implied conservatives were “mentally retarded” drones that were seconds away from snapping and “killing” someone. (more)

FreedomWorks, the conservative nonprofit that received a call from a Geico voice actor that accused the organization of employing “mentally retarded” workers and encouraging followers who were liable to snap and “murder” someone, has posted some of the backlash they’ve received after the actor was terminated. “For a side so concerned with Tea Party hate speech, they sure seem full of rage,” writes the organization. (more)

A voice-over actor — best known for telling viewers they can save 15 percent or more on car insurance — says he lost his gig doing Geico commercials after leaving a voicemail with a group that organizes Tea Party events to ask how many of its employees are “mentally retarded.” (more)

In the continuing debate over the recently signed health care bill, the flash point is the individual mandate—the requirement that nearly all American adults purchase what the federal government determines is an adequate amount of personal health insurance. Even though this aspect of the bill had received widespread support in the business community and has been supported in the past by some Republicans, many Americans still see such a sweeping mandate as a bridge too far. (more)
