We have heard more angry attacks on Americans from the so-called peaceful Muslim world for the mere mention that a Koran might be burned than we have ever heard from them in condemning their fellow Muslims for perpetrating terrorist attacks on behalf of their religion. (more)

As my flight approached America last weekend, my mind circled back to the furor that has broken out over plans to build Cordoba House, a community center in Lower Manhattan. I have been away from home for two months, speaking abroad about cooperation among people from different religions. Every day, including the past two weeks spent representing my country on a State Department tour in the Middle East, I have been struck by how the controversy has riveted the attention of Americans, as well as nearly everyone I met in my travels. (more)

The so-called “mainstream media” has spent the past week trying to determine how anywhere from one-fifth to one-quarter of the American people could conclude that President Obama is a Muslim.  The commentary has almost universally condemned Americans as “ignorant,” “ill-informed,” “racist,” or “bigoted,” asserting disdainfully that it’s “obvious” that Obama is a Christian. (more)

Last week, President Obama said he had “no regrets” about endorsing the building of a mosque near Ground Zero. This was between vacations and right before he started his trip around the country to raise money and campaign for Democratic members of Congress who are in electoral trouble, most of whom were not in electoral trouble until Obama started campaigning for them. (more)

Watching the Sunday morning talk shows leads a viewer to conclude these TV hosts with their Beltway regulars are living in an alternate universe. While there can and should be an honest debate about whether or not a mosque should be built near the World Trade Center site, it is dishonest to label close to 70 percent of the American public as Islamophobes and bigots. All the hand-wringing, sighing and pained expressions! The incomprehension at how hundreds of millions of citizens could be so misinformed, so misguided! It must be the fault of fear mongers and opportunistic politicians! But not to worry, the valiant, extravagantly-paid journalist celebrities of the “establishment media” will expose the retrogrades, castigate the perpetrators of ignorance and educate the unwashed masses! (more)

Yesterday, Greg Gutfeld, the host of Fox News’ 3 a.m. show “Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld,” answered 10 questions for The Daily Caller about how his show came to be, his good-natured guests, his new book and the “most offensive” thing he and his panel have ever discussed on air. Now, Gutfeld answers 11 more questions for TheDC about his new book, The Bible of Unspeakable Truths, his high school buddy Barry Bonds, and his plans to build a gay bar next to the Ground Zero mosque. (more)

The ongoing controversy over whether or not Muslims should build a mosque near Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan fits conveniently into a false narrative — perpetuated by biased reporting and misinformation — that confrontation, not dialogue and cooperation, is the hallmark of America’s relationship with Muslim Americans and the Islamic world. It also exposes the fallacy that political correctness and pandering to Muslims are the best way to build bridges to them. (more)

The debate over whether to build a mosque at Ground Zero grinds on. By now almost everyone knows it would be a YMCA/JCC-like neighborhood Islamic community center not even visible from Ground Zero.  The Washington Post recently published an aerial picture of the neighborhood to make that clear and provided an interactive walk around the area on its website. More importantly, America’s commitment to private property rights and the rule of law (not to mention religious freedom) have been clearly upheld by President Obama, New York’s Governor Patterson, New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg, and the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission. Score one for what we stand for and what has helped to make us great. So the debate has moved on. According to the sometimes clear voice of Charles Krauthammer, “No one disputes the right to build; the whole debate is about the propriety, the decency of doing so.” (more)

The right-wing campaign against the so-called “Ground Zero mosque” includes vicious personal attacks on the Muslim cleric who leads the Cordoba Initiative, the organization behind the plan. I know Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, and I know him to be a moderate, forward-leaning Muslim — yes, it is true he has said things with which I disagree, but I have never expected him to function as a member of the Zionist Organization of America. (more)
