Yet despite their access to sophisticated equipment, soldiers are lugging water to shore one bottle at a time and often find themselves unaware of other relief efforts by aid groups. (more)

Thank goodness President Barack Obama told the world last June that the United States could be seen as “one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.” If it weren’t for that declaration there wouldn’t be one Muslim country helping out in Haiti. (more)

The disastrous earthquake striking Haiti has clearly exposed its frailty as the poorest nation in the Americas. With the consent of the Haitian government, the United States must seize the initiative in leading the international rescue and relief effort. The effort must not only match but go beyond the level of American assistance provided to Indonesia after the 2005 Tsunami. (more)

America’s response thus far to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12 has been far too mute, creating an unexpected vacuum of leadership in a critical region. Haiti is the most impoverished nation of the Americas. The government under President Réne Préval is weak and literally now in shambles. Cuba and Venezuela, already intent on minimizing U.S. influence in the region, are likely to seize this opportunity to raise their profile and influence in a country that is already battling drugs and corruption. (more)
