According to the inaugural The Daily Caller/ConservativeHome 2012 Presidential Tracking Poll, 27 percent of a panel of likely Republican primary voters believe former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has the best chance of beating President Obama in 2012, though he is not necessarily the candidate they like the most, or believe would do the best job controlling federal government spending or dealing with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Fifteen percent chose New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as their favorite candidate — more than any other candidate — though he has continually insisted that he is not running. (more)

Here’s a tip for Republicans who would like to see a new occupant at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue two years from now. Don’t look to Washington for your next standard bearer; look to the statehouses. Since 1956 nine sitting presidents have run for re-election (I’m including Lyndon Johnson and Gerald Ford, both of whom weren’t actually elected to their first terms). Three were defeated while six were successful in securing a second term. (more)

Pundits often separate presidential candidates into “tiers” based on their chances of winning. A recent fad has been to separate contenders into faction “primaries” such as the “Establishment Primary,” the “Tea Party Primary,” the “Social Conservative Primary,” or the “Mormon Primary.” I prefer to look at candidates in terms of “ranks.” “Tiers” may tell us about the state of the race and faction “primaries” may describe how activists sort through their preferences, but if we divide candidates into “ranks,” we can separate the potentially great and successful leaders from the mediocre or even harmful ones. (more)
