No one’s entirely sure how many people showed up this weekend for Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally.  Beck has suggested the number is around 400,000.  The official unofficial number provided by Washington, D.C.’s Park Services is 325,000.  CBS low-balled the event, claiming that no more than 85,000 attended, only to have their assertion countered by NBC’s estimate of 500,000.  Regardless of the numbers, Democrats are desperate to dismiss the event. They do so at their own peril.  There’s a lot they could learn from it. (more)

Week after week, I come here to bury Keith Olbermann, not to praise him. I mock his opinions, his verbal tics, his pompous demeanor and his orange face. But just for kicks, I’m going to try something different this week and see if I can find something to celebrate about this sad, angry little man who is wrong about everything. (more)

For months, the conventional wisdom has been that Democrats’ best hope of holding the House rests on two things: the long time they’ve had to prepare for a wave election, unlike in 1994, and the money advantage they’ve accumulated due to fumbling at the Republican National Committee and House Republican fundraising arm. (more)

On Monday evening, a friend told me that Patrick Murray, the Republican opponent of Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), was holding an event on the roof of my apartment complex. Intrigued due to the RealClearPolitics video of Moran saying “the economy has recovered” this past weekend, as well as the ethics issues Moran was cleared of earlier this year, I attended the event, where the campaign allowed me a few minutes to interview Murray. (more)

Barack Obama rode a Twitter and Facebook infused wave of support all the way to the White House. Before the scream, Howard Dean’s net roots support propelled him to improbable frontrunner status in the 2004 Democratic primary. Even Bob Dole had a website way back in 1995. Certainly, the Internet has changed political communications. But, one key ingredient to a political campaign hasn’t changed much or adapted to the Internet age – television advertising. Given the divided nature of the country and the competitive nature of politics these days, that’s pretty noteworthy. (more)

The first week of pleasant weather in the nation’s capitol brought out swarms of residents, who brushed off the winter grime by marching on the streets of Washington, D.C.  More than 1,000 health care reform advocates, organized by Health Care for America Now, rallied yesterday in Washington D.C.  The march went from Dupont Circle to the Ritz Carlton hotel, where an association of health insurance companies was meeting. (more)

Nevada Senator Harry Reid’s recent gaffe isn’t the first time that Republicans have tried to recreate the Lott controversy and bring down a Democrat. In February 2005, then-Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean joked that Republicans couldn’t fill a room with non-white members “unless they invited the hotel staff in.” Mississippi Republicans sprang to action, sending their African-American leadership out to demand Dean’s resignation. “Ask the Democratic party do the same thing to Dean that Republicans and other Democrats did to Senator Lott,” said Charles Evers, an African-American GOP activist and veteran of the Civil Rights movement. (more)
