Wednesday, President Barack Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon stood side by side on the White House lawn, smiled, and attacked an American state.  It was a display grotesque and bizarre, laden with the stink of lies and ripe with hypocrisy.  For a half hour or so, the two men hammed it up for the assembled international press, reveling in themselves as they mischaracterized a law that, most likely, neither of them managed to read.  Calderon later addressed Congress.  Again, he targeted the U.S., focusing on Arizona’s immigration law and its nonexistent human rights abuses.  As he did so, he received a standing ovation from those who populate the left side of the aisle. (more)

WASHINGTON — Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Thursday strongly denounced Arizona’s new law clamping down on illegal immigrants and urged members of Congress to pass “comprehensive immigration reform.” (more)

Arizona’s new immigration policy, which requires aliens to carry immigration papers and directs the police to detain “suspected aliens,” has re-ignited debates over how to reduce illegal immigration. Most of this debate involves wishful thinking: the claim that stricter border controls or Arizona-like measures can make a real difference. The reality is that only four policies can significantly reduce illegal immigration. (more)

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says its goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie is heading to Haiti to meet with earthquake victims. UNHCR spokesman Andrej Mahecic said Jolie would travel to Haiti later Tuesday. He provided no details of her planned itinerary for security reasons. (more)

Last month immigration reform, one of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s “10 most important legislative priorities,” took another step forward when Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) unveiled the “Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act of 2009.” Over 85 house Democrats have co-sponsored his bill. (more)
