The Dems’ Dead Agenda: “Is comprehensive immigration reform likely to be addressed this year … ?” Mark Krikorian: ” … there is no possibility …” (more)
In our Daily Caller column last week about immigration, we focused on policy and aggressively argued the case that America should import 100 million more immigrants of all types, including science PhDs and the working poor. Doing so would grow our economy, strengthen our position relative to China, and showcase America’s values. (more)
How do we get beyond the inflammatory and self-defeating polemics of our current immigration debate? Sadly, the new Congress is shaping up to be just as divisive and deadlocked as the last one. (more)
This past election cycle, the American people marched to the polls with a clear-cut message for their officials in Washington — stop. Stop the rise of massive government. Stop developing policy behind closed doors, through backroom deals. And stop this anti-American agenda. The results were a “shellacking” for the party in power. (more)
Last Friday, comedian Stephen Colbert testified at the behest of Democrat Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren as an expert witness before a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on immigration. What should have been a serious hearing on an important subject affecting millions of Americans predictably devolved into a stand-up comedy act from a fictitious character that Colbert portrays on his talk show. Harry Reid’s gambit to attach the DREAM Act as an amendment to this year’s Defense Authorization Bill failed miserably last week. Republicans, who strongly oppose DREAM as a stand-alone measure — but might one day consider it as part of broader immigration reform legislation — weren’t biting. Reid, however, never expected them to. He wanted Republicans to vote DREAM down so that that he could continue to paint the GOP as “anti-immigrant” with Latino voters back in Nevada. Reid’s been in a dead-heat with Tea Party favorite Sharron Angle for months, and may well lose his seat. Latinos comprise 22% of the Nevada electorate, and voted 3-1 for Obama in 2008. Reid desperately needs to get them to the polls. (more)
Tea Party activists who are debating whether to embrace “family values” issues in a year when the economy could make or break the Democrats and sweep their candidates to power are also divided over another hot-button issue — immigration. (more)
Democrats on both sides of Pennsylvania Avenue are poised to launch an eleventh-hour effort to pass an immigration reform bill this year. (more)
President Obama lets people break laws that he doesn’t like. The latest example is his backdoor amnesty for thousands of illegal immigrants, as a still-fuzzy but insidious picture is emerging. (more)
The people who watch politics closely expected it, the ones who didn’t assumed it, and now we know it. Through an internal U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service memo, the Obama administration blatantly confirmed amnesty is their number one objective regarding illegal immigration. Actually calling removal of persons who are not in the United States legally a “threat”, this is not only proof of a Capitol Hill rumor that was just in the past few month showing teeth, but another spit mark on the Constitution made by our current leader. Republicans and President Obama agree that this week’s decision by a federal judge to defang Arizona’s illegal immigration law shines a spotlight on the need for an immigration reform debate that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recently declared dead for the year. (more)
A group of Republican senators has written to top immigration officials in the Obama administration asking them to reveal whether large-scale plans are under way to provide a so-called non-legislative version of amnesty. (more)
An anti-immigration group is calling on the Obama administration to ensure a smooth exit for illegal immigrants who are trying to leave the U.S. due to the weak economy and Arizona’s strict new immigration law. (more)
In a bid to remake the enforcement of federal immigration laws, the Obama administration is deporting record numbers of illegal immigrants and auditing hundreds of businesses that blithely hire undocumented workers. (more)
As I witnessed the birth of my first child on July 4th, screams echoed throughout the delivery room. The anguish wasn’t coming from my stoic wife, but rather from the doctor, who was irate over Obamacare. After practicing medicine for 17 years, her malpractice insurance now represents half of her annual salary: a sum she must borrow with interest in order to pay in one lump sum. (more)
Despite strong rhetoric from the Obama administration in support of a federal immigration overhaul, time is running out for Congress to pass a comprehensive bill by the end of the year, leaving advocates for reform wondering when, if ever, a bill will make it to the House and Senate floors. (more)
No doubt, the problems we face — massive unemployment, a broken immigration system, a malfunctioning financial sector — are monumental. But it does not follow that each complex, giant problem must be addressed by one complex, giant bill. If anything, history shows that piecemeal reforms are often more lasting than a legislative Big Bang. (more)
(CNN) — Lawmakers return from a weeklong break on Monday with a full plate of unfinished business awaiting them. (more)
The cost of harboring illegal immigrants in the United States is a staggering $113 billion a year — an average of $1,117 for every “native-headed” household in America — according to a study conducted by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). (more)
The Obama administration has been holding behind-the-scenes talks to determine whether the Department of Homeland Security can unilaterally grant legal status on a mass basis to illegal immigrants, a former Bush administration official who spoke with at least three people involved in those talks told FoxNews.com.
