An article published Wednesday by The Daily Caller’s Jonathan Strong revealed that, behind the scenes, there is some dissension in the Republican ranks about which tack the party should take with its budget negotiations. That drew the ire of conservative talker Mark Levin. On his Wednesday evening radio broadcast, he blasted the Republican leadership. (more)

1.) Feds may have to bail out Detroit for a second time — If the federal government decides, in its finite wisdom, that poorly run states and municipalities do not deserve to sink or swim based on the electoral acumen of their residents (or lack thereof), and chooses instead to “bail out” bankrupt members of the American federation, there will be some irony in the decision. In Detroit, two of the city’s public pensions are under investigation for “risky investing” that cost the two funds $480 million in three years. According to the Detroit Free Press, “many of the investments involved secretive middlemen, who pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars, or were vetted by controversial investment adviser Adrian Anderson and his firm, North Point Advisors.” Anderson is currently under investigation by the SEC, but has not been charged. In the meantime, “the pensions are paying the legal bills of Anderson and a second adviser who scrutinized failed real estate deals.” Have you heard the one about the burglar who fell through the woman’s skylight and then demanded that she pay for his medical bills? This is sort of like that. (more)

1.) Unethical Google alumnus leaves White House one day after FCC passes net neutrality — Andrew McLaughlin should have left the White House in March, when he was found to be using his personal gmail account while at work, or even in May, when internal memos revealed McLaughlin was coordinating PR with Google’s U.S. public policy director. Instead, the nation’s deputy CTO waited until the FCC passed its net neutrality bill to bid adieu to government life. According to WaPo, “McLaughlin, who previously worked as a Google executive, oversaw many of the White House’s Internet policy initiatives including Internet access regulations, the expansion of broadband connections and global cybersecurity.” Not mentioned in WaPo’s writeup is Google’s ardent support for net neutrality regulations. McLaughlin will dive back into the startup world, creating products for state and local governments. He “also said he will return to teaching law, which he did at Harvard University’s Berkman Center seven years ago.” Interesting factoid: The Berkman center is the far-left think thank that the FCC commissioned to produce objective reports on the apparent need for net neutrality regulations. (more)

1.) How the left astroturfed net neutrality into existence — Despite what you may have heard, yesterday’s net neutrality vote at the FCC wasn’t the result of millions of Americans or even tens of thousands of Americans waking up and saying, “I think I am going to suddenly care about this!” No, like most Washington success stories, yesterday’s enslavement of the Internet was made possible by a small group of people with a lot of money. “After McCain-Feingold passed, several of the foundations involved in the effort began shifting their attention to “media reform”—a movement to impose government controls on Internet companies somewhat related to the long-defunct “Fairness Doctrine” that used to regulate TV and radio companies,” writes the WSJ’s John Fund. Those outfits are Pew Charitable Trusts, Bill Moyers’s Schumann Center for Media and Democracy, the Joyce Foundation, George Soros’s Open Society Institute, the Ford Foundation, and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, all of which have given money to left-wing froth factory Free Press. As a result of Free Press’s close ties to staffers for FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, net neutrality crusaders gamed the debate from the beginning: “Some of the same foundations that have spent years funding net neutrality advocacy research ended up funding the FCC-commissioned study that evaluated net neutrality research.” (more)

1.) Joe Miller’s private security guards take ‘libruhl’ media antipathy too far — The bearded David to Sen. Murkowski’s pinch-faced Goliath may have just provided a boon to everyone else running for Alaska’s Senate seat. On Sunday, Miller’s private security team put an Alaskan journalist in an arm-bar and then handcuffs during an event at a public middle school because the reporter, Tony Hopfinger of Alaska Dispatch, would not stop asking inconvenient questions about Miller’s past. According to Hopfinger’s own account and photographs, Miller’s team restrained the camera-wielding journalist, then told him he was under arrest and made him sit handcuffed in a corner for 30 mins until the police arrived, at which time it was revealed that Miller is not Wyatt Earp and Alaska circa 2010 is not a Cormac McCarthy novel, where might makes right, etc., etc. Miller, a decorated military veteran and Harvard Law graduate, made light of such violence during his speech when he said of securing America’s southern border, “If the East Germans could do it, we can do it.” (more)

1.) Democrats who hate Democrats and the Democrats who pretend to like them a lot – They may be a minority, but House Democrats who are running for re-election on what amounts to an anti-Pelosi platform are very, very real. TheDC’s Jonathan Strong counts Alabama Rep. Bobby Bright, who joked that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “might get sick and die”; Rep. Joe Donnelly, the Indiana Dem who took Pelosi over his knee on the carbon tax just one year after supporting a vague list of supposedly quick and painless environmental fixes; as well as Reps. McIntyre, Nye, Altmire, and Childers, each of whom voted a big fat “no” on a piece of legislation close to Madame Pelosi’s heart. Ironically, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has actually given money to some of these people! That’s ironic, right? Maybe Dems are thinking that even the thorniest DINO can be Bart Stupak’d into doing something heinously stupid, making them preferable to an equally ornery but uncontrollable Republican? Meh. Who cares? It’s not like 70 seats are at play! (more)

TheDC’s Jonathan Strong wrote a piece today detailing numerous e-mails sent by Dave Weigel, a reporter who  — until he resigned this afternoon — covered the conservative beat for the Washington Post. Strong’s article raises several troubling questions about Weigel himself, his superiors and colleagues at the Washington Post, and the hundreds of so-called objective journalists who are members of the Journolist e-mail group and have been privy to this information for months. (more)
