It’s been ten days of non-stop speculation since the Indiana legislative session ended, and its beginning to feel like Gov. Over at the American Spectator, John Tabin states what should be obvious to most conservatives: Mitch Daniels most certainly will not run for president. His stunning and telling silence about defense and foreign policy — which has been well captured over the course of the past year by Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin — suggests that Daniels isn’t a serious or credible candidate. (more)

America has entered the age of the impending crisis. Our budget deficit — the largest any nation has ever had in all of human history — is set to exceed $1.5 trillion, more than 10% of GDP. Against this backdrop, President Obama has acted as a modern-day Nero, fiddling with NCAA brackets while America’s finances burn. (more)

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Republican leaders, activists and donors, anxious that the party’s initial presidential field could squander a chance to capture grass-roots energy and build a strong case against President Obama at the outset of the 2012 race, are stepping up appeals for additional candidates to jump in, starting with Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana. (more)

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels said today he will sign a controversial bill that cuts off government funding to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider. Indiana will become the first state to take such an action. (more)

When legislation to defund Planned Parenthood hit the desk of Indiana Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels late Wednesday night, headlines excitedly proclaimed ‘the truce is over,’ referring to Daniels’ remark last year that the next president would need to call a ‘truce on social issues.’ But social conservatives, many of whom were infuriated by Daniels’ comment, are divided on whether signing the bill would absolve Daniels, who is considering a run for president in 2012. While signing the bill could put Daniels on the road to redemption, many leaders in the social conservative community say it will not get him all the way there. (more)

Most of the speculation of who benefits from Haley Barbour’s announcement that he won’t run for president has centered on Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, Barbour’s close friend, who is set to decide in the next few weeks whether or not he will enter the race. Within minutes of Barbour’s announcement, Twitter buzzed with Daniels’ name. But strategists say Daniels is not the only one who will benefit from Barbour’s decision. (more)

No prospective Republican presidential candidate has done more to highlight the issue of debt and deficits than Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels. He calls it the “new red menace,” an ocean of red ink that he says is every bit as dangerous as the Soviet nuclear threat during the Cold War. (more)

In his zeal to reform Wisconsin’s state finances, Governor Scott Walker has overlooked the obvious fact that the prime concern of every Republican, from Mitt Romney down to the lowest precinct captain, should be retiring Barack Obama from the presidency next year. By attacking the collective bargaining rights of public employees in Wisconsin, Walker has replicated Barack Obama’s Big Mistake of 2009: using a temporary legislative advantage to strong-arm unpopular measures through (with zero bi-partisanship), and employing parliamentary trickery as the finishing stroke of the process. As with Obama, this has given rise to a spontaneous, “tea party” kind of movement on the left, has energized the enemy base, and will undoubtedly lead to retribution at the polls, as it did for Obama. In fact, Walker may be recalled even before he can run for a second term. (more)
