California nanny-staters are at it again. Sometime later this month, the Los Angeles City Council is expected to pass a ban on plastic carryout bags. Not surprisingly, San Francisco was the first U.S. city to impose a plastic bag ban and California accounts for almost two-thirds of the 74 plastic-related bans in the U.S. (more)

Nanny-state politicians and bureaucrats are constantly telling Americans not to text while driving. Some state legislatures have gone so far as to enact laws cracking down on texting behind the wheel, even though there are already distracted driving laws on the books. The issue has become a crusade, if not an obsession, to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. (more)

In 1985, Coca-Cola, the Fortune 500 soft drink company based in Atlanta, rolled out “New Coke,” a modest overhaul of the phenomenally successful formula the global company had for decades used in its flagship beverage. The switch backfired with the public, and Coca-Cola quickly reversed course, returning to what had brought consumers by the billions to its products. (more)

If 2011 taught us anything, it’s that the nanny state is alive and well. From January through December, and at all levels of government, acts of needless, nonsensical regulatory meddling were constant reminders that individual liberty truly has become an endangered concept in America and the means of exercising individual liberty have become endangered species. One of the most endangered of these species is the cell phone, which appears to be atop the nanny state’s hit list for 2012. (more)
