A veteran’s charity under investigation in five states has deep ties to Minnesota, from substantial contributions to state Republicans like former Sen. Norm Coleman and Rep. Michele Bachmann to its employment of a Minnesota lobbyist and a recently closed St. Paul operation. Officials in other states are calling the United States Navy Veterans Association (USNVA) a fraudulent charity, and its founder and sole organizer, Bobby Thompson, has disappeared in the wake of investigations alleging the group diverted charitable donations intended for military veterans to Republican candidates and political action committees. (more)

Barack Obama rode a Twitter and Facebook infused wave of support all the way to the White House. Before the scream, Howard Dean’s net roots support propelled him to improbable frontrunner status in the 2004 Democratic primary. Even Bob Dole had a website way back in 1995. Certainly, the Internet has changed political communications. But, one key ingredient to a political campaign hasn’t changed much or adapted to the Internet age – television advertising. Given the divided nature of the country and the competitive nature of politics these days, that’s pretty noteworthy. (more)

It showed that the Republican was in a virtual tie with the Democrat in a solidly Democratic district. The United States is a center-right country. Under most circumstances, few would argue otherwise. If there was any time when this was in question, it was late 2008 when President Obama was elected and the left wing of the Democratic Party had the wind at their backs. The president himself seemed to believe the country had moved substantially to the left. And now his decision to bail out failed companies, try terrorists in civilian courts, and support a government takeover of health care is backfiring. This shouldn’t be a surprise. This is a center-right country. (more)
