In the first quarter of 2012, the Republican Governors’ Association (RGA) outraised the Democratic Governors’ Association (DGA), but the release of the DGA’s tax filings show that the RGA and the DGA were using different methods to calculate the total sum raised, and if you compare the two with the same methods, the RGA’s haul was almost double that of its Democratic counterpart. (more)

The leaders of the Republican Governors Association lashed out at President Barack Obama at a Monday press conference following a meeting at the White House, saying that they left the meeting feeling frustrated with a president who is all talk and no action. (more)

January 26th, 2012

Rumors began swirling early Thursday morning that North Carolina’s Democratic governor, Bev Perdue, would soon be announcing that she would not seek a second term. The embattled governor had been performing poorly in statewide polls and faced a strong challenge from Republican Charlotte Mayor Pat McCroy, who she ran against in the 2008 election. (more)

Republicans in West Virginia are looking for an upset in Tuesday’s special election for governor that would send the third Republican to the executive mansion since 1929. (more)

September 28th, 2011

On October 4 West Virginians will elect a new governor to fill the vacancy created by Joe Manchin’s election to the U.S. Senate in Nov. 2010. Voters will choose between Democratic Acting Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and Republican businessman Bill Maloney. (more)

September 20th, 2011

In a Monday interview with WJHL-TV in Bristol, Va., Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell demurred on endorsing either Texas Governor Rick Perry or Mitt Romney for president. McDonnell, who has himself been floated as a potential vice presidential nominee, did not rule out the possibility but denied actively seeking it. (more)

The Republican National Committee announced Tuesday that it raised slightly more than $7 million in March, finishing the month with $3.2 million in cash on hand and $19.8 million in debt from the 2010 election cycle. (more)

On October 28th, just days before the November general elections, I wrote about four gubernatorial candidates to watch as unconventional politicians. Those included New Mexico’s Susana Martinez, Nevada’s Brian Sandoval, Oregon’s Chris Dudley and Wisconsin’s Scott Walker. Dudley, a terrific man, lost, but hopefully he will be back to fight again. The other three candidates won and are already showing results. I wrote about how Scott Walker “demonstrated how to balance a budget consistently without raising taxes.” He is showing that right now as governor of Wisconsin. (more)

Texas Gov. Rick Perry says he won’t run for president in 2012, despite a national book tour aimed at bolstering his profile among conservatives. The clear evidence came last week in San Diego, when he agreed to take over as chairman of the Republican Governors Association for the next two years. (more)

Gov. Rick Perry says he hopes to use the platform of the Republican Governors Association to press his case against the federal government. Perry is expected to be elected chairman of the group next week when the RGA meets in San Diego. During a book-signing of his states-rights manifesto, Fed Up, in Round Rock on Thursday night ( a couple of young autograph seekers pictured at right), Perry said he would invite Democratic governors to join him in the pressing states rights. (more)

While Republicans celebrate their historic gains in state legislatures, governors’ mansions and in the U.S. House of Representatives, we should also pause to ask why the GOP came up short in many races.  After all, leading up to Tuesday the GOP had one of the largest enthusiasm gaps in recent memory, according to Gallup.  If Republicans want to improve their game, the party needs to ask where — and why — it did not fully capitalize on voter enthusiasm and make greater gains this cycle. (more)

Mississippi Republican Governor Haley Barbour on Sunday was quick to predict a Republican takeover in House after Tuesday’s election, but hesitated to say the same for the Senate. Barbour appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” alongside Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine, who said he believed Democrats would continue to control both chambers of Congress after the election. (more)
