After a few days’ absence thanks to either bad oysters or the stomach flu, Keith Olbermann returned to “Countdown” this week with scores to settle, names to name and questionable accomplishments to brag about. Let’s review! (more)

1.) Incoming congress knows that water wears down the rock not by force, but with constant falling — “To prevent deficit reduction from being used as an excuse for tax hikes, Republicans are getting rid of the ‘Pay-As-You-Go’ rule and replacing it with a ‘Cut-As-You-Go’ rule,” reports The Daily Caller’s Jon Ward. “The rule will require that any legislation that seeks to increase mandatory spending (which is spending that once added to the federal budget recurs year after year and is thus permanent) cuts spending by a similar amount.” If successful, this would change the entire economy of the House. “As [Blunt] put it, ‘Let’s turn the activists for big government on each other, instead of letting them gang up on the taxpayer,’” said Majority Leader John Boehner. “Through this public discussion, we might end up finding out that neither program has a whole lot of merit in the first place.” Instead of trading horses, people will start shooting them. This means fewer horses to feed. (more)

I’ve been watching “Countdown With Keith Olbermann” regularly since January of 2010. Please, don’t pity me, it only makes it worse. And it’s been quite an entertaining year! Here are my picks for the Top 10 Keith Olbermann Moments of 2010. (more)

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10: Kicking off a spectacular week of sensitivity toward women’s issues, tonight Olbermann giddily crowed over the fact that two BBC reporters mispronounced “Secretary of Culture Hunt.” Then he told a story about the time that he himself made a pronunciation error in reporting on air about a “quail hunt.” GET IT? He repeated it several times in case you didn’t, almost bouncing out of his chair with excitement over the cleverness and hilarity of it all. (more)

1.) Romney joins growing chorus of anti-something-something conservatives — The number of conservatives who are opposed to the tax cut deal is growing. On Monday, Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney joined radio host Hugh Hewitt, the Washington Post’s Charles Krauthammer, and Senators Tom Coburn and Jim DeMint in opposing the bill on the grounds that “the temporary nature of the taxrate extension would limit the positive economic impact and correspondingly make the deficit worse,” writes The Daily Caller’s Jon Ward. Romney, like the others mentioned above, has also raised red flags about unfunded spending contained in the bill. Coincidentally, you could say the same thing about Romneycare. (more)

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12: Tonight’s “Countdown” was most notable for what wasn’t said: Keith bragged about having canceled a segment on the supposed plagiarism in George W. Bush’s new book. “Only when I saw the actual books just before air tonight was it evident that a lot of these so-called similarities appear only when some very selective editing is done, either in Bush‘s book or the other ones. So the segment is dead.” (more)

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10: Tonight, Keith Olbermann joined everyone on Facebook and Twitter in getting a kick out of an Ohioan Phil Davison’s speech in support of his nomination to the GOP candidacy for county treasurer. Davison paces and shouts with dictatorial fervor about his master’s degree in communications and his intentions to change things in Stark County. If you think irrationally angry people are funny — which I’m guessing you do because you’re reading a column about Keith Olbermann — you probably got a kick out of it. He’s baaaaaaack! Keith Olbermann returned from a two-week vacation on Monday. Meanwhile, MSNBC announced that his substitute host Lawrence O’Donnell’s own show, “The Last Word,” will debut Sept. 27 at 10 p.m. Olbermann’s little bird is flying from the nest to build his own! Now there will be two shoddily constructed, little-watched nests trying to avoid being eaten by Fox. This won’t end well. (more)

Ruth Graham took a page from her favorite cable news host’s playbook this week and went on vacation. However, unlike Keith, she’s spending her time off away from the computer. By Tuesday night’s episode of Countdown, we realized that our interns hadn’t built up the mental and physical fortitude they’d need to cope with Ruth’s usual assignment, so instead, we decided to have them scour the keith@keitholbermann.com inbox for new entries in the KeithOlbermann.com Cornell College essay contest. Though we’ve already announced official winners and runners up, we think some of the other entries we’ve received are worth sharing. (more)

I don’t know about you, but when I take a long vacation, I like to turn off my phone, leave home and see the world. When Keith Olbermann takes a vacation, he holes up in his apartment, Tweets unceasingly and becomes so angry about minor political squabbles that he then has to come back into the office to lecture us about it on air. It’s like the saying goes: A blowhard’s work is never done. (more)

What a tumultuous week for Keith Olbermann! MSNBC announced that frequent “Countdown” substitute host — and actor! — Lawrence O’Donnell will host his own show at 10 p.m. weeknights, bumping the nightly rerun of “Countdown” to 11 p.m. Now who will cover for Keith when takes a month off, or gets so mad that he decides not to come to work? (more)

Almost every night on “Countdown,” Keith Olbermann names three “Worst Persons in the World.” He also wrote a 2006 book with same title. (The fact that the cover bears a huge photo of its author always cracks me up.) One night in February, he grandiosely announced that he was discontinuing the “Worst Person” segment in favor of a “Hall of Shame” — and, surprise, he has a “Hall of Shame” book coming out in October — but soon enough he returned to naming Worst Persons. This week provided a good opportunity to look at the Worst Person segment in depth. It’s as mysterious and maddening as the man himself. (more)

Keith Olbermann has a nightly television show, a blog, and has written several books. If the man spent any more time churning out pearls of wisdom, he’d have to see a doctor. Well, call a medic, because last night, Keith Olbermann joined Twitter. His first Tweet reads thusly: “I give up. I was wrong. Young and foolish. Now my twitter-cot belongs to the ages. Behold: I tweet.” Only Keith Olbermann could compose a tweet that’s 5 sentences long. (more)
