The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) damages both American health care and its human capital. For employers, health care is a maintenance contract for supporting optimal physical and mental functioning of their employees – their human capital. (more)

At the invitation of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, a dozen American “policy-wonks” from differing perspectives travelled to Germany in December 2009. The Foundation was interested in our observations of the German social health system. My interest was how consumerism and individual choice worked in Germany. (more)

After Jack Murtha, another Pennsylvania all-star, made an art form out of shoving our troops under the bus for his own career, I never thought I’d live to see what Rep. Patrick Murphy has just done: a neatly bundled vote wrapped in the flag with a camouflage bow on top. And a price tag. (more)

“I strongly disagree with the recently adopted law in Arizona. It is a law that not only ignores a reality that cannot be erased by decree, but also introduce a terrible idea using racial profiling as the basis for law enforcement.” Mexican president Felipe Calderon said. (more)

Last week, Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) gave a keynote speech before a crowd of Internet regulation supporters and stated some amusing falsehoods about the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) attempt to take over the Internet. At a summit held by the organization Free Press, Sen. Dorgan claimed that the government developed the Internet, established the rules underpinning net neutrality when it created the Internet, and that the attempt by the FCC to takeover the management of networks is not a government takeover. (more)

The costs of ObamaCare were to be paid by reductions to Medicare ($500 billion) and taxes on those with high incomes and investments ($500 billion). However, the actuarial and economic analyses don’t take into account the ultimate 100 percent tax on one’s income—the loss of your job. (more)

President Barack Obama used a commencement speech last week at the University of Michigan to attack a growing number of American Citizens who disagree with him and have become increasingly concerned about his policies and governmental practices. (more)

Many empty promises have been made to the American people in the past year and half, starting with a promise for “Change in Washington.” Unfortunately, what they’ve seen happening for the past 15 months isn’t the change people were bargaining to see. (more)

A few months ago, I met a gentleman at the National League of Cities conference in San Antonio named John McAlister. John is a fellow City Council member from Gahanna, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. As we waited for a boat tour of the downtown San Antonio Riverwalk, John and I discussed politics in our hometowns, a common discussion at these conferences. Soon our discussion turned to national politics and the challenges facing our country. I learned of John’s steadfast commitment to the oath of office he took upon entering his role of City Councilman, that to uphold and defend the Constitution, an oath that City Councils, County Supervisors, state legislatures and Congressmen take all across this country. John strongly believes that we can regain limited federal government by holding local politicians accountable for their votes. I found his zeal refreshing and reassuring since I, too, am impassioned by such beliefs. (more)

Since winning freedom in 1776 and beginning the American journey under our Constitution in 1789, the United States has been a beacon for individual rights to life and liberty. A nation as complex as ours has many heroes, many struggles and shining examples of humanity, modernity and compassion. From the men and women who serve across the globe wearing the uniform of our Armed Forces, to those in Clandestine service within the Intelligence apparatus, and Americans who give their heart and souls through humanitarian work, America is strengthened by selfless heroes. (more)

The great frustration for many Americans during the debate on ObamaCare was tone-deaf politicians. No one seemed willing to listen to their concerns. Federal deficits, pork-barrel spending, and the cost of health care got lost in the push to pass partisan legislation. As we move into the regulatory phase of writing the critical implementation rules, the concern is that Obama-bureaucrats will also ignore the people. (more)

WASHINGTON – The House has abandoned plans to take up legislation giving residents of the District of Columbia a vote in Congress that has been denied them for over two centuries. (more)

Many Americans said “No!” to ObamaCare in polls and recent elections from Virginia to New Jersey to Massachusetts. But, now it has passed. The majority of citizens still want it repealed. The anger and frustrations are unlikely to subside as some politicians are hoping. ObamaCare is now the law of the land. That may change with the pending constitutional challenges, but the time has come to plan ahead and prepare for a very different future. While lawyers and politicians consider “repeal and replace” reform initiatives, employers and benefit managers must move to implement. (more)

Freedom from fear. A generation has been born and raised the world over since Sudan held elections. This week, the people of this war-torn country voted. The Obama Administration proclaimed the elections would be as “free and fair as possible.” Genocidaire and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir no doubt enjoyed such legitimization. After all, if the American president is willing to legitimize the election via U.S. envoy Scott Gration, Bashir demonstrated hubris and confidence that the do-gooders would be silenced, or muffled as he continues to engage with partner Scott Gration, as their razzle-dazzle diplomatic dance obscures his intentions. His record. The truth of genocide, the gerrymandering of districts throughout Sudan, the rampant corruption, occasional kidnap of Aid workers, the unreported rapes and murders of his opponents, and so many more crimes against humanity. (more)

During his State of the Union address on Jan. 31, 2006, President Bush mentioned malaria twice. This probably took most Americans by surprise as the disease was banished from the States in the early 1950s. But as Bush and his administration established the ambitious President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), the disease would soon feature fairly high on the political and popular agenda. So it should — the disease claims the life of an African child almost every 30 seconds. (more)

In the past year we have seen a country frustrated by leadership that summarily dismisses the electorate. And, hypocritical members of Congress who, despite what they want us to believe, know that an executive order is worth no more than the paper it is written on. So, as the Republican Party seeks to capitalize on the discontent and frustration playing out across America, we must reach out in a strong and meaningful way to the largest, most diverse demographic in this country: women. (more)

With all the hubbub about the recently passed health care reform (sic?) bill, we thought we would step back and take a look at this thing through the eyes of Professor Alfred E. Neuman, he of irreverent MAD Magazine fame, who is apparently leading the “Don’t Worry, Be Happy!” political party in the 21st century. (more)
