While some were offended when they heard California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown’s mistakenly recorded message in which a member of Brown’s campaign referred to his Republican opponent, Meg Whitman, as a “whore,” the National Organization for Women (NOW) apparently was not. Instead of rushing to decry the misogynistic language, NOW endorsed Brown — less than a day after the message hit the news-cycle. (more)

BLACKSBURG, VA. – Angie Beale sat on Main Street here, more than three hours after the Virginia Tech football team’s shocking upset loss to James Madison, in the retrofitted golf cart she and her boyfriend bring to every Hokies game they attend. – ”While the general consensus seems to be that Warren will get the chance to head the consumer-centered agency she claims to have come up with, it has not gone unnoticed that the Obama administration appears to be dragging its feet on her nomination.” TheDC’s Amanda Carey can tell you why: Warren is an obnoxious human being. “[She] has gotten major criticism in the way she’s carried out her duties,” George Mason law professor Todd Zywicki told TheDC. “There are serious concerns about her impartiality and that she uses these jobs as a platform for self promotion.” A bankruptcy attorney who worked with Warren on the National Bankruptcy Review Commission added his own anecdotes to claims that Warren is only in this for the chance at a daytime talk show. For example: When it came time for the committee to draft its report, Warren hijacked the process, substantially rewrote several sections, and told everyone else involved in the project to suck an egg. Such was their ire that the rest of the commissioners wrote a dissenting report correcting Warren’s version. Then again, Warren will fit right in with the baby daddies, slum lords, tax evaders, and mockers of the mentally disabled who currently pollute the White House.

I wonder if President Obama read what so many others did last month in The Washington Post: that Virginia will enjoy a $220 million budget surplus despite the struggling economy.  If not the Post, then surely the President glanced over a recent issue of The Economist in which Governor Chris Christie is congratulated for closing “an unprecedented $11 billion budget gap…without increasing taxes.” (more)

White House gatecrashers Michaele and Tareq Salahi say they want to “return to who we were.” “We’ve been the “it couple” for the past decade,” Michaele tells Bernard Goldberg of HBO’s “Real Sports” in a profile of their charity, “America’s Polo Cup,” airing tonight. Their annual polo match, currently under investigation by the state of Virginia for possible fraud, was bare-bones this year with sponsors and contenders from India backing out. (more)

Secretary Robert Gates wants to make sweeping budget cuts in overhead at the Department of Defense (DOD). For starters, he has proposed eliminating Joint Forces Command (JFCOM) in Norfolk, Virginia, a 10 percent cut in contractors, the reduction of at least 50 generals and admirals, and the elimination of 150 Senior Executive Service (SES) civilians. I applaud Gates for his initiative. Not only will it save money for the needed modernization of weapons and equipment necessary to maintain our military capabilities, but it will make the DOD more efficient and effective. (more)

While the global economic downturn continues to take its toll, a new United Nations agency report contends that young workers may have been hit the hardest, pointing to a dramatic rise in the number of unemployed youth around the world. While analysts list a host of reasons why young people can’t find jobs, there is one culprit, at least in the United States, that some economists say continues to rear its head: The federal minimum wage. (more)

Caspar Weinberger was known as ‘Cap the Knife’ because of his ability to hold down government spending before he became Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of Defense.  Robert Gates may in the future leave the Pentagon with the moniker, ‘Bob the Belt-Tightener’ for his courage to champion responsible spending as Defense Secretary.  And if Gates can successfully reallocate money to focus on military modernization priorities such as shipbuilding, he may well also be dubbed, ‘Bob the Builder.’ (more)
