Fannie & Freddie bonuses three times the size of AIG bonuses

Remember the outrage from the administration over hefty bonuses paid to AIG executives in 2009? Back then, shortly after AIG was bailed out by American taxpayers, the company went through with already planned bonuses to top executives.

The bonuses, which totaled $165 million, sparked a hot national debate over how much freedom private companies should have to pay large bonuses after they had become dependent on taxpayers. The House and Senate passed measures calling for the More »

Mark Block now referring to himself in third person, too

Robert Stacy McCain has an interview with embattled Cain campaign manager Mark Block, via Matt Lewis.

In it, Block reasserts that the Perry campaign was responsible for leaking reports of the settlements reached with Cain’s sexual harassment accusers by the National Restaurant Association, which seems odd given he had to reverse course on blaming Perry consultant Curt Anderson last week:

BLOCK: No, no — I will not back off of the Perry thing, Stacy. I More »

Sounds like bitter clinging to me, Mr. President

The president got all religious on his jobs-bill pitch yesterday:

The president rebuked the House of Representatives for passing a bill reaffirming the US motto “In God We Trust” rather than getting to work on his stalled $447 billion jobs program.

“That’s not putting people back to work. I trust in God, but God wants to see us help ourselves by putting people back to work,” the president said.

Jay Carney was asked about the More »

Science knows why you’re a cheapskate

A professor of economics and psychology figured out why it took me three years of deliberation to buy a $120 iPod nano. Turns out, I’m a cheapskate, psychologically. My brain is a tightwad, according to LiveScience’s feature on the opposite personality traits.

Prof. George Loewenstein of Carnegie Mellon studied 13,000 people, starting in 2004, and found that 24 percent of them are tightwads, More »

Good news: Another satellite crashing to earth with infinitesimal chance of hitting you

Pull out your calculators and 20-sided die again to protect against imminent disaster. They should be readily accessible from the last time we went through this— a month ago.

Germany’s ROentgen SATellite (ROSAT) X-Ray telescope [will begin a] fiery uncontrolled re-entry to Earth just before Halloween.

“It will not be possible to make any kind of reliable forecast about where the satellite will actually come down until about one or two hours before the fact,” says More »

‘Occupying’ your time: The Daily Caller scavenger hunt

This week “Occupy Wall Street” begat “Occupy DC,” “Occupy New Orleans,” “Occupy Boston” — and before we knew it this week, most of the United States as officially “occupied” territory.

With all these protests, there’s lots for observers to do if they don’t feel like chanting “This is what a hastily assembled mob looks like.” And is there anything better than a scavenger hunt for “occupying” your spare time?

Here’s your assignment: Find as many of these More »

Obama presser: Don’t worry, all these problems are someone else’s job!

I always learn so much about other people’s jobs when the president gives a press conference. When he’s asked about his own performance or scandals plaguing his administration, the president has a tendency to start popping out other people’s job descriptions. The job description deflection was on prominent display today.

The president was asked about prosecutions of Wall Street wrongdoers: “[O]ne of the reasons why so many of the people of the Occupy Wall Street More »

Totally unfun bureaucrats ban Thriller dancing on Halloween

Dealing with the most important issues with the utmost perspective and common sense, as bureaucrats are wont to do, the city of Boca Raton, Fla. has decided to nix an annual neighborhood Halloween performance which would have benefited The Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Rick Newman has been holding a Halloween extravaganza on his lawn for the past four years, including elaborate lawn displays and a light show. This year, 30 volunteer dancers were set to perform Michael Jackson’s More »

Free the Alcohol! (and save your budget?)

In many American cities, budget crunches have whet local politicians’ appetites for larding up their ledgers with new taxes and fees on anything they can find—sin taxes on soda, cigarettestattoos and strippers.

But in a few places, local governments are finding that more freedom might just mean more cash for them, removing barriers to business might be a boon to local More »

The Fiscal Zombie Apocalypse

Zombies are so hot right now. They have their own impeccably designed AMC show, just like Don Draper. The walking dead stalk the pages of best-sellers and screenplays. You can even pay for the privilege of being chased by them in a 5K— call them the jogging dead.

Unfortunately, the undead are also in your wallet.
