Rand Paul says ‘it would be an honor to be considered’ as Romney’s veep (this explains a lot)

Earlier today, Chuck Todd, NBC News’ political director and host of MSNBC’s “Daily Rundown,” rhetorically asked: “Just what has Romney promised Ron Paul.”

Nobody knows if some sort of bargain has been made, but it is interesting that Rep. Ron Paul has never really attacked Mitt Romney, yet he has frequently attacked more conservative candidates at just the moment they were beginning to pose a threat to Romney. (For example, consider his latest ad, attacking Rick More »

A chat with Ed Morrissey

HotAir’s Ed Morrissey is one of the most respected and prominent conservative bloggers in America today. But his success as a political commentator was anything but predictable. During a recent conversation, Morrissey and I discussed the journey that led him here.

A middle-class kid from Southern California, after dropping out of college, Morrissey found himself driving a taxicab. Eventually, he landed a job as a tech writer More »

The Devil and Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum continues to come under fire for his religious beliefs and comments, the most recent example being a top story on the Drudge Report Tuesday (though TheDC first reported it on February 18). It included excerpts from a 2008 speech in which Santorum argued that, “Satan has his sights on the United States of America!”

I’m a bit ambivalent about this. Let me explain why.

While Santorum’s words sound blunt to secular ears, they More »

How Ronald Reagan helped invent the electric car

File:Chevrolet-Volt-DC.jpg

With five dollar a gallon gas prices looming on the horizon, and Tehran threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz, Americans are looking for alternative ways to limit our dependency on foreign oil. One possible solution might be the electric car. But there are longstanding questions; electric cards are expensive, and for that reason (and others), they haven’t exactly been flying off showroom floors.

There are political problems, too. Conservatives More »

Jennifer Rubin turns on Santorum

The American Spectator’s Quin Hillyer recently chastised his colleague, Jeffrey Lord, for alleging the Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin was “in the tank” for Mitt Romney. As evidence, Hillyer noted that Rubin “has written literally several dozen pieces that are absolutely glowing about Rick Santorum …”

Hillyer was correct; Rubin has written positively about Santorum. But that was before Santorum posed a serious threat to Romney (or anybody, for that matter.)

Why Republicans usually win on social issues (and why this helps Rick Santorum)

On CNN Sunday morning, Rep. Ron Paul, who — for all the “small-government” conservative talk — harbors an odd infatuation for Mitt Romney — implied that social issues are “a losing position.” In this regard, Paul, a paleoconservative (a nearly-extinct species most known for losing national elections), seems to have a short memory.

As Jeffrey Bell’s forthcoming book (per the Wall Street Journal’s review) notes,

Social issues were nonexistent in the period 1932 to 1964. More »

What Rick Santorum could learn from Barry Goldwater’s loss

Rick Santorum’s comments about the “dangers of contraception in this country” generated much debate yesterday.

The DC Examiner’s Philip Klein hit on the libertarian objections, noting “there’s a reason why no president has talked about these things — because the president has absolutely no business lecturing Americans about their sex lives.” While I obliquely made the same point yesterday, my column focused primarily on the political consequences of Santorum’s unexpurgated contraception comments.

The campaign to undermine Marco Rubio

There seems to be an orchestrated effort emerging to undermine Sen. Marco Rubio. At least, that’s how it looks.

On the heels of that recent and terribly flawed Reuters story, there have been multiple other shots fired his direction. Some of this may simply speak to Rubio’s level of activity and effectiveness. But the assault hardly seems organic.

Consider the last week, or so, as an example.

During a press briefing this week, White House press secretary More »

Rick Santorum and ‘contraception conservatism’

It seems too early for an October surprise, but a video taped last October of former Sen. Rick Santorum discussing his opposition to contraception has surfaced, and it could pose serious problems for the surging candidate.

When it comes to discussing such issues, Santorum should have practiced abstinence. He did not.

The problem, of course, is that this now legitimizes what previously seemed to be — despite having been brought up repeatedly during an ABC News/Yahoo! More »
