INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indiana liquor store trade group wants a court to freeze state alcohol permits until a judge can clarify quota laws on the number of permits allowed.

The Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers filed a complaint Thursday in Marion Superior Court in Indianapolis asking for an injuction barring the state Alcohol and Tobacco Commission from issuing permits until a judge can interpret and clarify state quota laws.

Quota laws set the number of retail alcohol permits based on an area’s population.

Trade group chief John Livengood said the commission is calculating the quota in a way that results in twice as many permits being considered than the law currently allows.
