SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say two people are in critical condition after a boat packed with suspected illegal immigrants overturned off the San Diego coast.

Maurice Luque (loo-KAY’), a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, says 23 people were believed to be on the 30-foot boat when it overturned in the surf at Torrey Pines State Park around 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Six were hospitalized, including the two in critical condition.

Nine others are in Border Patrol custody and eight are not accounted for. Luque says the park is closed for a search.

Coast Guard Lt. Josh Nelson says his agency has dispatched two boats and helicopter to search for anyone who might still be in the 58-degree waters.
