The Pakistani army has signalled that it could launch an offensive in North Waziristan, where Osama bin Laden is believed to be hiding, later this year.
Although questions remain about Pakistan’s capacity to carry out a large-scale operation in the al-Qaeda stronghold, the tentative statement of intent was a boost to Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, during a visit to Islamabad.
